I Give You My Word - EncouragementMama.com

Dear Encouragement Sisters,

It used to be, when someone gave their word, it was a word that could be trusted.

Traditionally, it meant “My word is my bond to you.”

Agreements, peace treaties, and legal bindings were made between entire countries–just by giving their word and keeping it.

So why is it, we can’t always take people at their word today? Even worse, why is it so hard for us to keep our word to others?

It’s easy to say we will do something, and actually believe we will uphold it. But our follow-through is what matters most.

When my daughter was born, she had a benign tumor that had grown above her soft palate and was pressing down into her throat, largely blocking her airway.

We spent many days wondering if she would survive the intensive surgery, be able to swallow, make sound, or hear.

At that time, I remember giving God my word…

I promised to raise her according to the Scriptures. I told God that I would share the Bible with her from Genesis to Revelation.

Fast forward 20 years, and I feel like I almost kept my word. After all, we did share the Scriptures with her and raise her to love Jesus. However, we never made it through the entire Bible together. My follow-through was hit-or-miss.

Perhaps, you’ve had a few hit-or-miss words of honor in your life as well. Either someone has let you down, or you have let someone down…

>In your marriage, you feel like the vows you once spoke to each other are no longer being upheld.

>A friend has disappointed you by not following through. You are hurt and even angry.

>An employer promised to help you rise to the next level, but you are still stuck in the same position.

>Your church said one thing but did another. Now, you feel untrusting and distant.

Our word doesn’t always hold up, does it?

Today, (at the risk of failing), I want to give you my word. As your sister in Christ, there are several things I want you to be able to count on…

  • I will pray for you. When you ask for prayer, you can count on me to pray.
  • I will do my best to share the Scriptures correctly and never misuse God’s word in any way.
  • I will offer encouragement in the sincerest of ways, always reminding you that “We are in this together.”
  • I will listen to you and do my best to offer hope and direction from the Bible.

I certainly can’t promise perfection, but I can give you my word. As long as I’m still living and breathing, you can count on me.

Why?

Because I have been given a heart to encourage. And you are worth the encouragement!

To close this post today, here are a few of my top favorite verses in the whole Bible. After all, above all other words, God’s Word can be trusted!

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)

“Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper. (Psalm 1:2-3)

The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10)

Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness. (Proverbs 31:25-26)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4)

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. (Revelation 19:11-13)

What are some of your favorite passages?

Thank you for being on this journey with me. I always love hearing from you!
