It's Veterans Day! | What the Bible Says About Authority

Today is Veterans Day, so break out the stars and stripes and fly them proudly.

The first Armistice Day—November 11, 1919—marked the one year anniversary of the end of World War I, which was said to be “the war to end all wars.”

But, tragically, war is not something of the past, as Jesus said that one of the signs of the last days would be hearing of wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6).

That said, today is a day when we honor those American men and women who have served in our military—and they certainly deserve it.

Scripture says of those in authority, specifically military and police, “For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil” (Romans 13:4 NKJV).

A soldier or police officer as God’s minister? Absolutely.

That is not to say that every act done by every American soldier or police officer is necessarily right under all circumstances. What it does mean is that God has established an authority structure, and the military is a part of that.

So today, thank someone who has protected our freedoms as a member of the United States military. And thank God that they have put themselves in harm’s way for you and I.

I know that I do.

Maybe you thought you were actively pursuing Jesus this past year, but when you reflect on these questions, you realize you lost sight of him in the busyness and messiness of life.If thi

These “forgotten fathers” often bottle up their emotions, including grief, depression, anger and guilt – all of which can escalate to self-destructive behavior if they don’t seek counseling.
