Parenting Through the Ages

A fool spurns a parent’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.
--Proverbs 15:5 (NIV)
Now that my children are adults and long gone from the nest, I constantly remember my mother’s wise words, “Once a parent, always a parent. The prayers never cease.” She was adamant that parenting had no expiration date and did so with love until she died. Still, our earthly parents aren’t always able to effectively
nurture us through the years. Thankfully, our heavenly Father does so without
ceasing.
Raising two sons taught me that parenting changes over time. When my children were young, the priority was to keep them from harm. But as they grew older, the emphasis was teaching them to make wise choices. My husband and I gradually evolved from protectors to instructors. Decades later, we now provide guidance when our grown children seek counsel. Likewise, our relationship with God transforms as well.
When we are born again in Christ, we gain immeasurable grace. Our decision to turn toward our Father is supported like a toddler striving to take those first steps. God is patient with us. But as we mature, we learn to stand unassisted in various
circumstances having realized the danger of touching hot things (such as
gossip, envy, and lust). This wisdom comes from God's instruction and
discipline. Our Father teaches us that obedience is preferable to rebellious consequences.
As such, there are times when we require prodding to get back on course. The Holy Spirit gently nudges us in the right direction. And then there are situations where we become victims of our folly. God may allow us to fall hard when experience is the best teacher. Mercifully, our Lord picks us up and we can run back to Him even when we cause our troubles. Through the years, our Father is patient and kind as He parents us from infancy to the grave. We are His children. We never stop needing Him, and God never stops loving us.
As we emulate our Father’s patience, discipline and mercy, our children can grow into their purpose with confidence. Guiding our family in the way they should go, learning how not to provoke them, and utilizing discipline, allows us to become better parents no matter our age.

Questions for Reflection:
1. What role does your faith play in making parenting decisions?
2. What is the most difficult parenting decision you ever made? What role did God play in it?
