Scripture for Healing the Sick: 25 Verses to Pray for a Loved One

There's a particular kind of helplessness that comes when someone you love is sick and you can't do anything about it. You can't take the diagnosis from them. You can't fight the disease for them. You can't sleep next to their hospital bed and absorb the pain into your own body, no matter how much you'd trade places if you could.

What you can do is pray. And when your own words run out — which they will, usually within the first few days — Scripture gives you words that don't.

This is a focused collection of 25 verses to pray over someone who is sick. Not generic verses about God's goodness, but specific scriptures the church has used for centuries when standing at sickbeds. Some are direct prayers you can pray word-for-word. Others are promises to hold onto when the diagnosis gets worse. A few are the verses to pray when you're praying for a healing that doesn't seem to be coming.

How to pray Scripture over someone who is sick

Before the verses, a few principles. These shape how Scripture functions as prayer for the sick.

Pray Scripture by their bedside, even if they're sleeping. The Word doesn't require their conscious participation to work. Speak the verses softly into the room.

Personalize the verse with their name. "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted" becomes "LORD, you are close to [name] in her broken heart." This is not changing Scripture. It's receiving it on behalf of someone specific.

Combine Scripture with petition. Read the verse, then pray the situation. "Lord, your Word says you heal the brokenhearted. I bring [name] before you tonight. Be close to him in this pain."

When you can't pray, just read. On the days when prayer won't form, simply reading the verse aloud in the room is the prayer.

Don't claim certainty about outcomes. The most faithful prayer says, "Heal her, Lord, in the way that brings you most glory and her most good." Healing is in God's hands. Our prayers are the offering.

Scripture for healing a sick body

1. Exodus 15:26

"I am the LORD, who heals you." (NIV)

The first time God named himself a healer. Pray it back to him over the bedside: "You are Yahweh Rapha, the LORD who heals. Heal [name]."

2. Psalm 41:3

"The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness." (NIV)

The verse to pray over someone too weak to pray for themselves. The sickbed is named in Scripture as a place God sustains.

3. Jeremiah 30:17

"But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the LORD." (NIV)

A promise spoken to exiled Israel. Adapt: "Lord, restore [name] to health. Heal her wounds, as you promised."

4. Isaiah 53:4–5

"Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering… by his wounds we are healed." (NIV)

The cornerstone verse for understanding Christ's relationship to physical illness. He carried the disease before he answered the prayer.

5. Matthew 8:17

"He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases." (NIV)

7. James 5:14–15

"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well." (NIV)

The clearest New Testament instruction. If your loved one is sick, this is the model — call the elders, anoint with oil, pray together.

8. 3 John 1:2

"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well." (NIV)

A direct prayer for someone you love. You can pray it nearly verbatim: "Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health…"

9. Psalm 30:2

"LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me." (NIV)

A testimony from someone who has received what you are now asking. Hope from a witness.

10. Acts 3:6

"Then Peter said, 'Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.'" (NIV)

Scripture for healing the mind and emotions

Sickness isn't only physical. Sometimes the loved one you're praying for is suffering in their mind — anxiety, depression, grief, the fog that comes with extended illness.

11. Psalm 34:18

"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (NIV)

The verse to pray when someone you love is despairing.

12. Philippians 4:6–7

"Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (NIV)

Pray for comfort — not just relief, but the specific comfort that comes from God's presence.

The psalm that has been prayed at countless bedsides. There's a reason. Pray it over them slowly.

Scripture for a chronic or long illness

When the illness has lasted longer than anyone expected. When the prayer has been prayed for years. These are the verses for the long obedience.

16. Lamentations 3:22–23

"Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning." (NIV)

The verse for someone whose suffering has worn them down. The mercies are new tomorrow, regardless of how heavy today was.

17. 2 Corinthians 4:16–18

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." (NIV)

Paul's perspective on long-term affliction. The inner renewal continues even when the body declines.

18. James 1:2–4

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." (NIV)

A hard verse for chronic illness. Not "this is good," but "this is producing something."

19. Romans 5:3–5

"We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." (NIV)

20. Isaiah 40:31

Scripture when healing doesn't come

Some of the hardest verses to read are also the most necessary. Not every prayer for healing receives the answer we asked for. These verses speak honestly to that.

21. 2 Corinthians 12:8–9

"Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'" (NIV)

Paul prayed three times. The answer was no. The grace given was different from the cure requested.

22. Revelation 21:4

"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." (NIV)

The ultimate healing. The one that is promised without exception. The one that all other healings point toward.

23. Philippians 1:21

"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." (NIV)

Paul's perspective when facing the possibility of his own death. For believers, healing has more than one form.

24. Psalm 73:26

"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (NIV)

A prayer for someone who is sick

Frequently asked questions about Scripture for healing the sick

What is the best Bible verse to read to someone who is sick?

Psalm 23 has been read at sickbeds for centuries. Other commonly used verses include Psalm 34:18, Psalm 41:3, James 5:14–15, and Mark 5:34. The "best" verse depends on what the person most needs to hear — comfort, faith for healing, or peace about whatever comes.

How do I pray for someone in a hospital?

Pray Scripture aloud by their bedside, even if they're sleeping or unresponsive. Anoint with oil if you and the family are comfortable with that (James 5:14). Keep prayers short and present-focused. Don't pressure the person to "have enough faith." Trust God with the outcome.

Should I anoint a sick person with oil?
