Thank God for Laborers! - Enjoying the Journey

Labor Day came about in the midst of the turmoil of the Industrial Revolution. From the beginning it was a holiday for working people. In our day we cannot fathom the condition that so many of those laborers endured. In fact, this generation has more holidays from work that almost any in history! However, this day is still an opportunity for us to recognize the contribution of laborers and to remember the importance of work.

• Thank God for those who understand the importance of labor in our society. Too many young people have grown up thinking that others should provide for their comfort without understanding the necessity of their own work. We must emphasize again this foundational principle of civilization: God made us to work. Work was not part of the curse – Adam was working before the fall! It brings purpose to life and blessing to others. In the New Testament this truth was repeated, “And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you” (1 Thess. 4:11), and “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat” (2 Thess. 3:10).
• Thank God for those who understand the Importance of labor in God’s work. Many want to see God work but they are not willing to labor with Him. But believers have the high privilege and responsibility to be “laborers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Too many Christians are merely spectators and not participants in the work of the Lord. I realize more and more why the chief prayer request of Jesus was to pray for laborers (Matthew 9:38). The only shortage in God’s work is a labor shortage.

Recent generations have placed a strong emphasis on training leaders. This is the time to enlist, equip, and engage laborers! God always develops His leaders among the laborers. Pray for laborers and you will watch the Lord raise up leaders of His choice.

On this Labor Day pause and thank God for faithful laborers. You may want to express that appreciation to some laborer the Lord puts in your path. Then ask the Lord to help you be a faithful worker, both for your family and in the family of God. Thank God for laborers!
