The Guarantee of our Future

When I was 20 years old, I made a promise to a young, 19-year-old girl. I was in love and I intended to commit my life to her. As I stood before all those witnesses, I pledged my devotion to her until one of us died. That was my hope and yet I knew I could not guarantee the future.

God is different.  He makes promises and He keeps them. Jesus tells us to believe in Him. He says
He’s going to prepare a place for us, and He will be coming back again to take us to be with Him.

He made this promise a long time ago and I think He knew we might have times of doubt. So, He made another promise to send a Helper, to live with us and be in us. The Holy Spirit is our teacher and He testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. (Romans 8:16)

This next part is the most amazing of all. When we believed, we were marked with a seal, the same, promised Holy Spirit, who is also a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the day we die. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Believer, you have a promise from God that He is coming to get you one day very soon. His Spirit living in you is better than a written contract. He is the guarantee of your future.

By God’s grace, 45 years later I’m still married to that girl I fell in love with. We’re both still hanging on to our promise and clinging to God’s promise.

“Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

“Lord Jesus, thank you for your compassion and understanding our weak faith. We need the Spirit of Truth who assures us of all your promises.”
