The Joy Of Walking In The Light Of The Lord
Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord. Psalm 89:15
Psalm 89 serves as a declaration of praise to the Lord beginning with the first verse. It sets the tone for the rest of the Psalm and shines a light on the unfailing love of the Lord.
- I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Psalm 89:1
- Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. Psalm 89:2
- All heaven will praise your great wonders, Lord; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness. Psalm 89:5
The Psalmist didn’t whisper this truth quietly; he announced it boldly and repeatedly. Praise rises from a heart that remembers the covenant love of God. It produces confidence, joy, and worship.
The Psalmist invites us to lift our eyes away from the shifting circumstances of life. Instead, he invites us to focus on God’s steadfast character.
Kingdoms rise and fall, people fail, and situations change, but God’s faithfulness stands firm. When we walk in the light of that truth, we discover the deep and lasting joy of the Lord.
All of heaven declares the faithfulness of God. Not only do angels celebrate the Lord’s wonders, but even the highest angels stand in awe of His power.
The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne. Psalm 89:7
No power in heaven compares to Him, for God rules with unmatched authority. No rival threatens His throne, and no force in creation can challenge His power. The psalmist asked;
For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? Psalm 89:6

The Lord Rules Over All Creation
Creation reflects His greatness and displays His glory. Therefore, we do not praise God just because life feels easy; we praise Him because His character never changes.
Nothing in creation operates outside His authority. The oceans, mountains, and every field, in fact, the entire earth declares His ownership.
The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all. Psalm 89:11
This truth offers deep comfort, especially because of the unpredictability of life. Storms suddenly arise in our lives, making our circumstances shift without warning.
Yet the same God who calms the seas also governs the details of our lives. His power secures our hope. When we remember God’s sovereignty, we’ll refuse to surrender to fear.
Instead, we will rest in the confidence that the Lord holds every moment in His hands. The Psalmist also highlighted the moral perfection of God’s rule.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. Psalm 89:14
God does not rule with selfish ambition or corruption. His kingdom operates on righteousness, justice, truth, and steadfast love. The decisions that flow from His throne reflect those qualities.
The Lord never acts unfairly. Our trust in Him strengthens when we understand this truth. He never compromises righteousness. The promises He makes stand firm because of His character.
When we walk with God, we walk under the leadership of a perfectly righteous King. We have come to the heart of this Psalm, which appears in verses 15-17.

The Joy of Those Who Walk in His Light
- Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord.
- They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness.
- You are their glorious strength. It pleases you to make us strong. Psalm 89:15-17
The Psalmist shifted from describing God to describing His people. Those who walk in the light of the Lord experience a unique joy.
This joy doesn’t depend on our circumstances; it grows from fellowship with God Himself. To walk in the light of the Lord means to live in awareness of His presence.
It also means trusting His promises, obeying His commands, and celebrating His goodness. When we live this way, our joy rises naturally, worship fills our hearts, and gratitude shapes our attitude.
Did you notice what the Psalmist said about these people? They rejoice in God’s name all day long, celebrate His righteousness, and find strength in His presence.
The world often searches for joy in temporary things like success, possessions, or comfort. Yet those sources eventually disappoint.
Only the presence of God provides lasting joy. Walking in the light of the Lord transforms the way we see everything.

Christ Our Lord Brings Us Into the Light
The Psalmist celebrated God’s covenant with David and the promise of a lasting throne. That promise found its fulfillment in Christ, the eternal King from the lineage of David.
Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world.” Through His life, death, and resurrection, He opened up a new way. Now, all sinners can walk in the light of the presence of the Lord.
Sin once kept us in darkness and separated us from God. Christ stepped into that darkness and carried our sin to the cross. His sacrifice secured our forgiveness and reconciled us with Him.
Those who trust the Lord now walk in the light of God’s grace. We no longer wander in spiritual darkness because the presence of God surrounds us through Christ.
Walking in the light of the Lord does not remove every challenge from life, but it fills every circumstance with hope. Seeing God’s character more clearly frees our hearts to rejoice.

An Application to Live in the Light of the Lord
- Praise God for His Faithfulness. Take time each day to remember how the Lord has shown His steadfast love in your life. Let gratitude shape your worship.
- Trust God’s Sovereign Power. When life feels chaotic, remind yourself that the God who rules the seas also governs your circumstances.
- Walk Daily in God’s Presence. Spend regular time in Scripture and prayer. Awareness of God’s presence strengthens joy and faith.
- Celebrate the Righteous Rule of Christ. Submit your decisions to the authority of Jesus, the righteous King who fulfills God’s promises.
- Let Joy Mark Your Faith. Believers who walk in the light of the Lord reflect His joy. Allow that joy to shape your attitude and your witness.
Lord, thank you for taking us out of spiritual darkness. Now, Lord, help us to continually walk in your light, for you are the light of the world.
