A believer is a city on a hill built by God.

Our lives are open before all. The world around us is constantly watching us. Do you know why? Believers remain set apart from this world. We are no more the children of the world but children of God. We alone can bring fresh thinking to the table.

Jesus declared regarding believers that they are like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14).

A city on a hill cannot hide because it is full of light. A hill is a high place that displays the city in full view.

What is a city? It is fenced. It has judges. King Jehoshaphat put fences around the city and appointed judges to rule according to God’s law. (2 Chronicles 19:5-7). We need to build ourselves according to the will of God.

The first well-established city was Babel. God scattered the people in Babel because they built it against the will of God. (Genesis 11)

Jerusalem, the city of God, broken down because of disobedience (Isaiah 22:1,2). It was once a joyful city. The chosen people of God often fell away because of sin and rebellion. Disobedience brought in carnal natures that led to spiritual death often.

How to be the holy city of God?

God alone can build us up (Psalms 127:1). Without God, our lives will fail. We can do nothing without Jesus (John 15:5). In Christ, every believer is New Jerusalem, a holy city (Revelation 21:2).

The New Testament ministry started with Jesus telling his followers to witness (Acts 1:8). To be a witness, they needed to receive the Holy Spirit.

As Spirit-baptised children of God, let the Holy Spirit guide you. Let Him be your teacher, counsellor, comforter and friend. He will build you into a holy city for the glory of God. Prepare yourself to meet Jesus. Praise God, and Amen.
