This statement is either from someone who is lying boldly to your face or by someone who sucks at connecting their actions to consequences. In neither instance are they a good person to be around.
They may be lying to more than just you in making this statement.
This sort of statement is designed to minimize the ugliness of what they did. They do not want to think of themselves as someone who cheats and harms their spouse like this. But the facts are that they are THAT person!
If they really cared about you, they wouldn’t talk about their intentions. Rather, they would take full responsibility for how their sin has harmed you. That is what a caring person does in this situation.
