God Sings Over Us Like a Loving Parent

1x
The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. – Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

I climbed up with my chubby little legs into my mother’s lap. She would help me up onto her lap, and stroke my hair as we gently swayed forward and back, my eyes filled with tears. Mom hummed a melody familiar to my little girl’s heart, rocking my pain away in the black rocker with ornate gold leaves painted on the back. Sniffling with my foot bandaged from a rose thorn she had pulled from it, I began to feel better. Nothing felt so comforting as being rocked by my mother as she sang lullabies to me.

Although my mom wasn’t a Christian, she had been churched as a young girl. The notion of God singing over us would have been foreign to her. Somehow, she knew that singing over me would comfort me, whether I was sick, tired, hurt, or had been corrected. When she disciplined me for misbehavior, it took a while before she would eventually sit in the rocking chair with me on her lap and sing to me. God’s love comforts, protects, rejoices, and delights much as a loving mother does for her children.

Just like loving parents comfort their children, God comforts His children, too. In our passage from Zephaniah 3:7, we read that God is with us, saves us, and delights in us. Yes, He delights in us! God rejoices over us with singing. Israel had been in exile for a long time, a punishment God issued them, not because He hated them. On the contrary, He loved them so much that He wanted to draw them back into a right relationship with Him. God loves and comforts His children with perfect love—singing over us.

Enter God’s presence through prayer and Bible reflection, sharing what troubles you with your Heavenly Father. Lean into Him, knowing that He rejoices and sings over you with perfect love. Settle into His loving arms as He delights in you and sings over you.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Are you hurting, scared, unwell, sad, or upset? Where do you go to seek comfort?
  2. Have you strayed away prayerless, afraid to come back to Him in worship?

An Inspired Challenge for Wives This Father's Day - Today Can Be Different

Consider asking your husband how you can pray for him each day. (If the father of your children doesn’t live with you, for whatever reason, remember to put him on your prayer list too.) Your husband wants nothing more than to succeed, but he probably struggles with issues he’s afraid to admit, even to himself. He may feel insecure about being a dad, especially if he didn’t have the benefit of a good role model. Or maybe he feels more like an understudy because he’s “only” a stepdad.
