God's Protection is Always Present

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. - Psalm 91:4

I’d like to share with you two examples of God’s protection that I’ve recently experienced. One involves preventing something from happening that would have harmed me, and the other involves protecting me in a dangerous situation as it happened.

For many months, I’ve been wrestling with the disappointment of wanting something deeply and not seeing it come to fruition. It’s something I really believed was supposed to happen. I’ve had multiple confirmations that the Lord prevented it for my safety and have recognized this as truth, yet I’ve still struggled to accept it. Through prayer and counseling I’ve come to acknowledge this as God exerting His Father nature. He was parenting me as a good father does: looking out for my safety and preventing harm. He saw further down the road than I did and knew of dangers that were unknown to me. He literally saved me from harm.

Intellectually, I know that if He prevented this thing I wanted so badly, He surely must also have a better plan for me (Jeremiah 29:11). But getting my heart and soul to align with this truth has been much harder, because I’ve had to let go of my expectations and trade it for faith. Friends, there comes a time when we must let go of the former things and look towards the new things (Isaiah 43:19), and this time had come for me. It was not easy. Working through grief never is. I’m in a much better place now, though, and each day I’m standing on faith for what lies ahead.

My second example of God’s protection involves a car accident I had recently. It really rattled me but ended up being incredibly minor. After the fact, it hit me hard how serious it could have been. I believe completely that the Lord had angels surrounding me. It’s humbling to realize how He protected me. It made me wonder how many times He has protected me that I don’t even know about. I speculate many, many times. It also made me think of my example above, and how He continues to guide and protect me for His good purposes. Thanks be to God!

I hope these examples of God’s protection in my own life encourage you to spend some time pondering this topic for yourself. He is faithful to lead and protect us, and He always sees farther ahead than we do. We are safe under his wings. He truly has our best in mind.

Questions for Reflection:

1. While I’m still in bed waking up each morning I thank the Lord for His protection. Do you have a similar gratitude practice? If not, might you consider starting one? I’ve found that this practice has actually increased my awareness of the many ways He protects me daily.

2. I want God’s will in my life, and yet I still find myself getting attached to things working out a certain way. Do you relate to my control struggle? Think about an example of this in your own life. Following the Lord’s leading and accepting His guidance is a daily decision. It means constantly laying down my will and my desires and saying, “Your will, Lord, not mine.” It’s hard, but the privilege of abiding in the safe shadow of His wings makes it well worth it.
