HOW TO USE HYMNS TO PRAY - Growing Through God's Word

How to Use Hymns to Pray

Music Notes

by Janis Cox

There are many times that I find myself humming a hymn or praise song. Or I am reading a passage of Scripture and a song comes to mind. I sing it right then as a prayer to God.

This past month this has happened many times. One day I read this passage from Oswald Chambers:

Never let cares or tribulations separate you from the fact that God loves you” (Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, May 19).

The fact that God cares for us is the name of my blog/website – He Cares for You. Based on 1 Peter 5:7.

Cast all your anxieties upon him because he cares for you.

So what song came to me?

Safe and secure from all alarms.

Where did that come from? A hymn of course. And remember this verse from Mark 13:7, NIV.

When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

We remain safe and secure – He cares for you.
Don’t worry. Give everything to Him in prayer. (Tweet this.)

Prayer:

Father we pray for those who feel alarmed with health issues, family problems, world situations or personal problems. We ask You to pour out Your Spirit upon them. Help them to know You in a personal way, Jesus. Remind them that we are safe and secure from all alarms. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Here is the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”. I hope you enjoy listening and singing with it in prayer.

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain

Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Refrain

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
