Let Faith Be Your Default

You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them (false spirits), because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. – 1 John 4:4 (CSB)
When I’m watching a TV show or a movie and something dark is about to happen to the good guy, I sometimes find myself praying for him or her. Now I know the difference between reality and fiction but somehow prayer is my default. I felt pretty silly about that, then I realized it’s okay that my mind went there. When I feel close to the Lord, I often think and react in faith to situations—even fictional ones.
The world can be a maze of temptations from those that would try to lead us astray.
“Come try this. It will make you feel good.”
“Come with me, I can make you feel appreciated.”
“God wants you to be happy.” “God’s all about love, you’re too closed minded.”
But in fact, God says the world is full of false spirits and prophets. The way we know the difference is the ones who are of God will tell of Jesus and what He did to give us everlasting life. If you’ve truly given your life to Jesus, you are in Christ and His Spirit lives in you. It doesn’t mean you are perfect, but you will feel the Holy Spirit reminding you that you sinned.
We grow to be thankful for that as we grow in Christ. God’s way is to walk in His righteous light. The false spirit’s way is to encourage you to put yourself first and join in with the world’s desires. When you know the Lord, you are better prepared to know right from wrong.
The Bible gives us awareness of the truth—how to walk in the light and shun the dark.
Prayer helps us see more clearly the path God wants us to walk even if it’s one brave step at a time. Our spiritual awareness gained by walking with Jesus will guide our steps and give us strength to stay in His light.
You don’t have to pray for the good guy or gal in a movie, but let your default mode always be your faith.

Questions for Reflection:
- Think of ways you can be more spiritually aware.
- When tempted, is your default mode to pray for a way out?
- What sins might you have avoided by being spiritually aware?
