The Priority of Prayer

With the National Day of Prayer, we’re not only following a great tradition of prayer in America, but we’re also following the model of godly men and women in the Bible.

Thousands of years ago, Nehemiah was cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia when he received news from his Jewish countrymen that the wall of Jerusalem had been destroyed and its gates had been burned to the ground. After hearing this devastating report, Nehemiah wept and fasted for many days.

He knew he had to do something about the situation—but first, he prayed.

Sometimes when we look at our problems, we only want a spiritual solution: we pray, but we don’t want to take action. Other times, we want to act, but we don’t want to pray.

What we learn from Nehemiah is that God calls us to prayer—and then action. More than ever, we need to humble ourselves and seek the Lord. Our political leaders need guidance and wisdom, and our nation needs an awakening.

As we observe the 70th National Day of Prayer in the United States, I encourage every believer to take some time and pray for our nation. But what do we pray for specifically?

  • We should pray for our nation’s leaders, especially our president (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
  • We should pray for a great spiritual awakening to sweep our nation as well.

My opinion is the only real hope for America is not a political one, but a spiritual one. Politics have their place, and I believe every responsible Christian should register and vote. However, the ultimate answer to America’s problems is us, as a nation, turning back to God.
