The Privileged Life: Hiking

IMG_2480Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.” Psalm 25:4

We are privileged to live very close to the Appalachian Trail…a 2,190-mile-long trail atop the ridges of the Appalachian mountain range from Georgia to Maine. In fact, the highest point of the trail is on the Tennessee/North Carolina border at Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 6,643 feet.

In just a short drive, we can be in a complete wilderness, walking along a pathway that thousands hike every day. Yet we may walk miles without seeing anyone or anything but towering trees and infinite vistas.

I’m thankful for lots of great hiking opportunities (which incorporates my gratitude for two healthy feet) where I can be enveloped by evergreen-scented woods, listening to nothing but silence. While God is with me everywhere, I often sense His presence more keenly in the stark vastness of His forested creation, when I am away from the distractions of modernity.

Next chance you have on a pretty day, take off and head for some woods…even if they are little more than a few trees in a city park. Walk along a trail or pathway, and contemplate where God is leading you. Thank Him for His guidance…and for the forestry officials who keep His nature unspoiled.

Lord, God of wonders who made the mountains and forests, lead us in your ancient paths of righteousness. Guide us as we walk through some of the difficult passageways of life, and keep us on the right trail that leads us onward to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
