As a Christian mom, I made it my priority to teach our daughter to pray at an early age, as I find prayer to be one of the best ways to introduce her to God and learn to connect with God at a personal level (Have a relationship with God). As with any habit, it is good to reinforce prayer regularly to form part of your child’s life. The one gift God gave us, we gave to our daughter: Prayer.
Here are tips on how to teach your child how to pray.
1 Make Prayer A Priority
If prayer is a priority in your life, your child will learn to make it a priority in their lives. I have come to realize that in order to have success in anything or any relationship, you have to make time. Make time for your marriage, make time with your friends and I believe the best way to teach your child to pray is by making prayer a priority. Make time for prayer.
2 Lead By Example
To get your child interested in praying, pray in front of them. Let your child see you offer honest, heartfelt prayers to God. Model prayer life
3 Be Consistent
“The value of consistent prayer is not that He will hear us, but that we will hear Him”
Treat prayer a key that you need to start your everyday task
• Consistently pray in the morning and before bedtime
• Pray before meals
• Pray before embarking on a journey
• Pray for someone in need (this will teach your child to intercede for others)
• Pray for every situation, when there’s a crisis, sickness.
This will teach your child how to connect and commune with God about anything
4 Include Your Child When You Pray
In our family, we have mornings and evening family worship. This is a great opportunity for us to teach our child more about God and why she has to pray. We sometimes ask our daughter to pray and even though we may not understand what she says but the smile of her face after she says Amen, tells me that she is happy that she is heard by God.
5 Make Answered Prayers Visual
Keeping a prayer journal or a wall of remembrance with prayer requests and prayer answered lists helps teach your child that prayer works.
There are a number of other ways you can use to teach your child to pray, these have prayerfully worked for us. As she grows older we will add and shortchange some things on this list.
