Cooperation for Salvation (1)
The recent six posts are on three stages of salvation leading us to New Jerusalem. The concluding stage is “a salvation ready to be revealed at the last time” (1 Peter 1:5). The “last time” is when the Lord Jesus returns visibly in glory.
God in Christ as the Spirit works in us to accomplish these steps of salvation, but He decided to wait for our cooperation. He could accomplish everything whether we want it or not, but He has chosen to be limited by our willingness to cooperate. Here are some verses from the New Testament about our cooperation.
John 1:11-12 reports that when the Lord Jesus came, “Those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” To become a child of God, the first step of our salvation, is easy but requires our cooperation, our receiving.
Second Timothy 2:22 exhorts us, “flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” To flee and pursue indicate action on our part. And we do not do this alone, but with those. We call on the Lord together to receive His supply. We cannot accomplish salvation on our own but we can call audibly, sometimes loudly, O Lord Jesus.
Receiving the Lord Jesus initially and calling on His name corporately are parts of our cooperation on the pathway to New Jerusalem.
