Devoting Ourselves to Prayer (Acts 2) ‣ Praying Through the Bible
Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
Here’s a simple little line, just a passage from Acts 2. It comes near the end of a description about the early followers of Jesus after he had risen and ascended to the Father. When they were together, here’s what they did:
- They taught, presumably about Jesus life and teachings
- They fellowship together, meaning spending time in each others lives and learning and caring for each other
- The breaking of bread, which could refer to simply meals or partaking of the Lord supper, though it’s probably both
- Prayed together
I’m not sure how common it is that people pray together in groups outside of “church.” Yep those who are believers and followers of Jesus Christ should be praying together often. Note that it says the disciples were “devoted“ to these practices. This means that they did them regularly, with intent, and abused them with great importance.
It is an old-fashioned idea, perhaps, and even naïve. But it is my dream nonetheless.
Consider your prayer life today. How often do you pray. When do you pray. Do you pray memorized prayers, spontaneous prayers, or both? What kind of prayers do you pray?
