Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits. – Psalm 103: 1-2
Have you ever watched a sunset with tears dripping down your cheeks?
Have you ever heard a baby’s laughter and instinctively broken out in laughter yourself?
Have you ever lifted your hands high in worship as you sang the words to a beloved hymn?
Have you ever gasped in wonder as you read the familiar words of scripture?
As we travel through life, one of the most astounding and beneficial habits we can cultivate is that of spiritual awareness. Spiritual awareness simply means that you are poignantly mindful of the presence of the Lord in your daily life. I have learned that spiritual awareness often does not come naturally but is a discipline that I must cultivate daily.
From the first moment I arise in the morning, I begin to thank the Lord for Who He is and what He will accomplish in my life that day.
I praise Him for His goodness and kindness while I brush my teeth and wash my face.
I sing a worship song while I make my coffee and settle into Bible reading.
I am determined that I will not be oblivious of His presence, nor will I ignore the daily blessings that He is perpetually throwing my way.
An exciting way to become more spiritually aware happens before you even open your Bible. As you open the sacred pages of scripture, pray for the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you read. Ask the Spirit of the living God to open your eyes to eternal truth and to personal application. When you read your Bible, never read it alone but invite the Holy Spirit into the process!
One of the most practical routines which is guaranteed to cultivate a sweet recognition of His involvement in my simple life is that of listing His blessings daily. Every night, before I go to sleep, I write down at least three things for which I am thankful. It’s an exciting moment in my otherwise mundane life. The God of the universe has thrown gifts my way and I am the richer for them.
As I determine to stay alert to the Lord’s activity in my life, I have found that He breaks up the hard soil of my heart and plants His miraculous fruit where before there was envy, bitterness or discontent. When I acknowledge His friendship and His loving authority, I become more like Him and less like me. Who wouldn’t want that?!

Questions for Reflection:
1. What does it mean to you to be spiritually aware?
2. How can you develop spiritual awareness in your life?
3. List three blessings for which you are thankful today.
