Masterpieces at Sunrise

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. -- Romans 1:20 (NLT)

Have you ever been to an event where an artist appears on stage with a blank canvas and tells a story through their art?

Darkness silences the audience. One note, then two. Dramatic music fills the room as light focuses on the empty canvas and uninhabited stage.

The artist appears and splashes some paint on the white canvas and with a few brush strokes makes a figure come to life. A few more brush strokes and there is a whole new picture with greater dimension and texture. The artist pauses, looks at his work and splatters a bit more paint here and there.

The audience gasps at the beauty unfolding around them, eyes wide in wonder. There may even be some eyes leaking tears at the majesty. And then it’s over. Oohs and ahs fill the room in appreciation at what has just been witnessed.

The artist humbly stands with his head bowed while the crowd takes in his artwork. He had noticed the child in the audience who sat in awe and wonder at his work, appreciating every brush stroke. Picking up the masterpiece, the artist makes his way into the audience and hands it to the unsuspecting child as a gift.

Our Master Artist does this every morning.

Just as the artist placed the painting in the child’s hand, God places His creation before us as a gift and an invitation to know Him better.

Every sunrise is a masterpiece and a gift meant to bless and restore us. It is a picture we can capture with our eyes and take with us in our hearts throughout the day as a reminder of His love for us and the beauty of creation. The birds provide the dramatic music, if we take the time to listen, and every day He paints a new picture for us to enjoy.

Take time to appreciate the fine art the Master puts on display for us. If you missed the sunrise, check out the sunset and worship the One who made it.

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. (Psalm 113:3, NIV)

His creation is a gift to us so we can know Him better. His creative character shines through each brilliant skyscape, His power through the mighty ocean, His omniscience through the intricate design of every living organism, and His faithfulness through every sunrise.

Breathe in His new mercies every morning and appreciate His faithfulness throughout the day.

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:23-24, NIV)

1. As you take a walk or look outside your front door, notice the colors found only in The Master’s artwork. What do you see?

2. What else can you observe in our natural world that will help you understand the character of God better?
