    • ·November 2, 2024

If you are a Christian, you have the power to overcome sin. That is the basic truth about sin and your victory over it which Jesus gave to you through His sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary.

You became a Christian to live your victory over sin and any sinful habits. I am using this post to give you an interesting illustration that will allow the truth above to sink into you deeply.

Illustration about the power to overcome sin

Some years ago, when I was trying to understand this truth about the power to overcome sin that I have as a Christian, the Holy Spirit began to make me see sin as a messenger that must obey my instructions and not the other way round just as I illustrated at the beginning of this book.

If as a Christian, I allow fornication or lies or deceit to ‘issue instructions’ to me and I obey, then I have, with my own permission, made my messenger my master! It’s just like your office clerk ordering you around in a business you own.

Paul’s statement about our victory over sin

Please read Paul statement on this issue of victory over sin:

“But [like a boxer] I buffet my body [handle it roughly, discipline it by hardships] and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit [not stand the test, be unapproved and rejected as a counterfeit].” (1 Corinthians 9:27) (Amplified).

Paul understood his new Christian status. He understood the power he now has to order sin around. He took a decision to use that power daily to put his body under subjection.

Power to overcome sin: Awake to righteousness

He also wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:34:

“Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.”

That was somebody who was in charge of sin. He was taking charge and putting his flesh under subjection all the time. He also showed in this passage that those who are not doing this do not have the right knowledge. Knowledge is indeed power.
