The Need to Worship Lies within Our Hearts

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart. – Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)
I usually begin my morning devotional time by praising God for creation, praising Jesus for salvation, and praising the Holy Spirit for inspiration. Then I spend time in prayer and Bible reading. Private worship helps me connect with God in a personal way. I take time to share the concerns of my heart with Him, and I listen, at least I try to, for His guidance and input.
At times I open my devotional time by listening and singing along with Keith Green's "O Lord, You're Beautiful." It expresses my heartfelt praise to God as I come before Him.
Of course I also worship with my congregation on a Sunday morning. While I appreciate hearing the sermons, I mostly worship through singing the hymns. "How Great Thou Art," celebrates God's majesty in creation. "Victory in Jesus" praises our Savior. "In the Garden" was my father's favorite hymn, so it's special to me.
Styles of worship differ. There's charismatic, traditional, contemporary and liturgical and combinations of these styles are as varied as individual churches. So it's important to find a style of worship with which you're comfortable. Personally, I like a mix. I like traditional hymns, but I also enjoy singing choruses. Both magnify God.
Worship, according to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary*, means to honor or show reverence for as a divine being or supernatural power.
The need to worship has been placed into the hearts of men and women around the world. Besides Christianity, ethnic groups worship deities found within Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and countless other religious beliefs. Every individual searches for something to give their life meaning.
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart." (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NIV)
"The heart of worship is to seek to know and love God in our own unique way" writes Adele Ahlberg Calhoun in Spiritual Disciplines Handbook.
There's no right or wrong way to worship, as long as our focus is on members of the Trinity—God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What is important is that we worship, not just come to our God with a list of wants. He is not Santa Claus. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and present with us everywhere. Worship Him today.

Questions for Reflection:
1. Where do you find you can best worship God? In church? At home? In nature? Somewhere else?
2. Besides the types of worship this article mentions, are there other ways we might worship God?
3. Do you feel more worshipful alone or with others? Why?
