The Supernatural Significance of Gathering Together

"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." -- Matthew 18:20
I attended a women’s conference recently and was reminded how incredible it is to feel and witness God’s power when people gather together with united purpose. We had blocked out the time to be fully present and expectant. Our hearts and ears were open to what the Lord wanted to say and do. We paid a cost in both money and time, and we cleared our mind for those two days. This showed the priority we placed on this time with the Lord. And He honored it! We saw women break free of all kinds of junk that had been holding them down, we saw passion for the things of God reignited, and we saw loneliness and isolation melt away as new friendships were made. For me personally, I left with a greater clarity on the ministry I’ve been called to in this season.
This conference was an incredible reminder that we are actually commanded to gather together. We’re called together to enhance unity (Acts 2:42), to pray and worship together (Acts 1:14, Acts 12:12), and to encourage and strengthen one another (Hebrew 10:24-25). These gatherings also fan the flames of God’s power. We see in Acts 4:31 that ..."after they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." There's just something so special and supernaturally significant about the people of God coming together for the purposes of God! It unleashes God's power in a unique way and empowers us to for bold, effective ministry.
To be honest, I think maybe I've been taking the command to gather together too lightly. But this conference really snapped me out of my complacency. As the anchor verse above states, we literally have the promise of His presence when we gather together. That’s incredible. And it's incredibly important.

Questions for Reflection:
1. Many people consider their relationship with God to be a private matter and do not see the need to meet corporately. What might they be missing out on by forgoing gathering with other believers?
2. Do you relate to my honesty about not taking the command to gather together seriously enough? If so, how do you plan to make this more of a priority?
