What do you do in a year of Drought? When you’re working as hard as you can yet nothing is happening and all your efforts seem to be for nothing? Trust God and you’ll remain untroubled in a year of drought.

Jeremiah 17:5-10

5 Yahweh says this, ‘Accursed be anyone who trusts in human beings, who relies on human strength and whose heart turns from Yahweh.

6 Such a person is like scrub in the wastelands: when good comes, it does not affect him since he lives in the parched places of the desert, uninhabited, salt land.

7 ‘Blessed is anyone who trusts in Yahweh, with Yahweh to rely on.

8 Such a person is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it has nothing to fear, its foliage stays green; untroubled in a year of drought, it never stops bearing fruit.

9 ‘The heart is more devious than any other thing, and is depraved; who can pierce its secrets?

10 I, Yahweh, search the heart, test the motives, to give each person what his conduct and his actions deserve.

In a Year of Drought

Have you ever had a year of drought where you work hard with nothing to show for it?

That’s me.

I’ve obeyed God and started this online businesses

I’ve worked harder on myself and my business than I’ve ever had before.

Yet, nothing seems to be happening.

Others start something and within just a few months, it takes off.

In fairness, it’s not yet been a year for me.

It’s just that, I started this business to also earn additional income on the side, but now my savings are drained, my work hours I’ve cut to give time to work on this so my income is cut, my bills are piling up, and my debts have increased.

On top of that, the cost of living has skyrocketed these days what with the war going on.

I feel like I’m drowning. I’m so frustrated.

Seems so selfish feeling this way in light of millions of people losing their security and home in Ukraine, maybe their lives.

But I still feel this way and so I come to You, Lord.

I’ve no other to turn to who can do something about all of this.

I know You alone can.

Trusting God in a year of Drought

7 ‘Blessed is anyone who trusts in Yahweh, with Yahweh to rely on.

8 Such a person is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it has nothing to fear, its foliage stays green; untroubled in a year of drought, it never stops bearing fruit.

Wow. What a reminder and balm to my soul is today’s first reading.

Oh and the responsorial psalm says the same thing too:

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6

1 How blessed is anyone who rejects the advice of the wicked and does not take a stand in the path that sinners tread, nor a seat in company with cynics,

2 but who delights in the law of Yahweh and murmurs his law day and night.

3 Such a one is like a tree planted near streams; it bears fruit in season and its leaves never wither, and every project succeeds.

4 How different the wicked, how different! Just like chaff blown around by the wind

6 For Yahweh watches over the path of the upright, but the path of the wicked is doomed.

In times of drought when nothing is happening no matter what you do, there’s nothing you can do but trust God.

And oftentimes, it’s the best thing you can do.

Be like a tree firmly planted on solid ground reaching underneath for the streams of living water so near.

Because you are. When you’ve given your life to God, you are a tree planted in Jesus, the Living Water.

You have access to life-giving water, though you may have to stretch down deep to partake of it.

Untroubled in a year of drought

Stay untroubled. Stay trusting God.

Keep on keeping on.

Keep on praying. Keep on trusting God. Keep on obeying God. Keep doing what He wants you to do. Keep on following His lead. Keep on working as He says.

Keep moving. One day at a time. Tackle one thing at a time.

Keep believing.

Blessed is the one who delights in the law of Yahweh and murmurs his law day and night. 3 Such a one is like a tree planted near streams; it bears fruit in season and its leaves never wither, and every project succeeds. Psalm 1

Do your best and God will do the rest.

Now your turn

Are you like me, frustrated with how you think nothing is happening with your life?

Trust God.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

You are a tree planted in Jesus, the Living Water.

When the heat comes you have nothing to fear.

You can be untroubled in times of drought.

You never stop bearing fruit.
