What Makes a Musical Life? Jean Sibelius’s The Spruce
How do we measure a musical life? Is it by how much we learn, how often we perform, or how much progress we make? These things matter, but they cannot tell the whole story.

In this final episode, we explore Jean Sibelius’s small piano piece The Spruce and what his life teaches us about achievement.
Jean Sibelius and The Spruce
Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) is best known for his symphonies and orchestral works. He also wrote shorter piano pieces, including The Spruce, Op. 75, No. 5, composed in 1914 and revised in 1919.
Part of Sibelius’s The Trees, Op. 75, The Spruce reveals a quieter side of his musical world. Though modest in scale, the piece has a distinctive character of its own.
After completing his tone poem Tapiola in 1926, Sibelius published very little new music, though he continued working on an unfinished Eighth Symphony. His long silence at Ainola, his home, remains one of the most intriguing chapters of his life.
The Spruce was written years before this silence began, so it should not be seen as a direct expression of that period. Still, Sibelius’s story raises an important question: Can a creative life be judged by its most productive years alone?

Learning to Number Our Days
Some seasons bring visible results, while others are filled with ordinary responsibilities, quiet effort, or waiting. A meaningful life is not measured by accomplishments alone, but also by what we choose to give our time to, even when the results are difficult to measure.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
This prayer reminds us that wisdom is not about making every moment productive, but about recognizing what deserves our time and attention.
Throughout this series, we have explored ways to make room for music amid life’s demands, from small beginnings and steady routines to flexibility and accepting our limitations.
Sibelius’s story brings these ideas together. Ultimately, the art of making time for music is part of a larger lesson: wisdom lies not in doing more at every moment, but in choosing what is worth giving our lives to.
