The Power of a Praying Mom
There’s a gathering place for prayer at the stone wall surrounding the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It’s called the “Wailing Wall.” But when I visited the historic site, however, I found a surprisingly quiet crowd there. Men and women of all ages whispered their laments to the Lord, stuffing handwritten notes into every reachable crevice.
I knew of this tradition and prepared paper prayers in advance, tucking them into the wall. They were prayers for my children. I’m sure many of the other papers contained prayers for children, too.
Praying for our beloved ones is so important. It’s not that we moms have a special access to God that other people don’t. But we have a unique privilege to pray for our children. God has blessed us by making us mothers, and He wants us to bring Him our praises and concerns about them.
Each morning at home, as I’m able, I spend time reading through Scriptures and turning them into thanksgiving as well as intercessory requests for my children. As I write, the words resonate in my heart and infuse God’s peace into my daily plans. I’m encouraged, too, when I look back and see how God has answered my prayers many times. Sometimes He answers “no,” but I’m always comforted by His presence even when I’m heartbroken.
Would you like to be more effective as a parent prayer warrior? The good news is that God doesn’t demand hours in daily laments. A one-word cry for “Help!” is enough for God to hear your needs on crazy-busy days.
There’s no magic formula to unleash His redeeming power. Simply grab your Bible or a Scripture app on your phone. Even if it’s only one “verse of the day,” turn it into a prayer for Him to guide your children.
If you have more time, write your prayers in a journal. My kitchen table is my favorite spot to talk with God, using my journals, Bible, and study books nearby in my “prayer drawer.” Jot down your prayers on small pieces of paper, too, to carry with you during the day.
Do you know other mothers who would like to pray with you? Meet them for coffee or join them online. You will be encouraged as you pray aloud together for God’s blessings upon your loved ones.
Moms, we have the vital responsibility to pray for the salvation of our children and grandchildren. Ask Jesus to claim them, to be their Lord and Savior. Ask Him to send them out boldly to live for Him. Cast your anxieties about your children upon Him, because He cares for you.
If you’re not a mom, pray for children in your church or neighborhood. Consider being a mentor to a child or young adult in your extended family.
Then, step back and watch how God weaves His beautiful tapestry of love. He, too, is a loving Parent who will give you His hope and joy in this amazing journey of motherhood.
