Classical Conversations Motto
CC seemed intriguing. I went over to their website, which is based in the US and dived straight in. There were so many new terms to understand: Foundations, Essentials, Challenge, Memory Masters, Practicum, co-op local community, Tutors, Directors and even “Conversations”. I read about their different programs, saw their blog and read their catalog.
I loved that they believe that I, the parent would be my kid’s primary teacher. I found the following in their catalog inspiring and encouraging:
“You are capable of educating your children. In fact, you have already been at the task since teaching your children to walk and talk.Your children did not learn to walk and talk because you are an expert in the mechanics of walking and talking, but because they were designed to learn to walk and talk.
You were there to point the way and help them along the path. They watched. They listened. They learned. Children walk and talk because they are God’s image bearers and have been created to learn. They were designed for it, and they were given parents to help them do it.
So you’ve already begun the journey of educating your children and now you may wonder what the future holds and whether you are up to what may feel like a new task. As your children grow, you can grow right along with them, and you don’t have to do it alone. Through Classical Conversations, you will gather teaching tools and encounter mentors along the way. Tutors and directors in your local Classical Conversations community will provide support and accountability on a weekly basis.“
It all sounded fascinating and quite exciting. The next thing on my agenda was to try and find out if there was a branch of CC operating in the UK, and I was enthralled to find:
I quickly connected with the admin in the FB group and joined a Practicum (a 3-day free online training event). Of course, all of this happened during the COVID-19 lockdown, so I wasn’t able to meet anyone in person or attend any co-op community classes. All communication was on the phone or via Zoom. However, as I spoke to the ladies in the group and got to know them more, I was able to get a better understanding of what they did in CC and what a typical day looked like.
I also learnt that CC UK was very new, they were only just pioneering it in the UK this year even though there were several mums doing CC in the UK already through the US website.
It is very exciting to be a part of it, and I can’t wait to see how it will benefit all of us in the months and years to come, Lord willing.
