Finding salvation: Lessons from the story of Jesus and the thief on the cross

Have you ever wondered if it's too late for you to find salvation, especially as you find yourself in the later stages of life? Or perhaps you know a friend who grapples with a similar thought process?

You are not alone.

Many individuals, who, like you, didn't grow up in the church or only encountered the teachings of Jesus late in adulthood, have raised poignant questions about finding salvation.

In this article, we aim to address these by delving into the story of Jesus and the thief on the cross. This is to shed light on the timeless lessons it offers for individuals seeking hope and salvation, regardless of their life stage or past experiences.

The story of Jesus and the thief on the cross

In the Book of Luke, we encounter Jesus and the two thieves on the cross during the crucifixion. At this moment of suffering and agony, Jesus, the Son of God, was crucified alongside two criminals.

During this dark hour, both of the criminals initially joined in the mockery and insults hurled at Jesus (Luke 23:39).

However, as time passed, one of the criminals had a change of heart. He began to feel remorse for his wrongdoings and recognized the righteousness of Jesus, saying,

"Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." (Luke 23:40-41).

Moved by the thief's heartfelt confession and humility, Jesus responded with profound grace and mercy. In a moment that exemplifies His boundless love, Jesus assured the penitent criminal, saying,

"Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:42-43).

On the other hand, the second thief remained unrepentant, continuing to mock Jesus along with the crowd (Luke 23:39).

Lessons from the story

Within this story of Jesus and the thieves on the cross, valuable lessons are waiting to be learned.

Here’s a breakdown of the narrative for you to understand these profound teachings and how they can impact your life.

Mockery of the Messiah

As mentioned, Jesus endured mockery from both the executioners and one of the thieves crucified alongside Him.

In our daily lives, this event can resonate with both Christians and non-Christians alike.

As a Christian, you may encounter moments where your faith is ridiculed or mocked by others who do not share your beliefs.

Just as Jesus endured the mockery with love and grace, this story can serve as a reminder to respond with kindness and compassion, even in the face of adversity.

Instead of being drawn into negative behavior, you can choose to emulate the example set by the repentant thief, who turned to Jesus with a humble heart and received His promise of eternal life.

For non-Christians, this event can be a profound reflection of how we treat others and respond to unfamiliar beliefs.

Just as one thief allowed the crowd's mockery to influence his behavior negatively, this story encourages non-believers to be open-minded and respectful towards others' faith and beliefs.

Humble before Him

The transformation of the repentant thief before Jesus is truly remarkable, with his profound humbleness shining through every step of his encounter.

As he observed the events alongside Jesus during His crucifixion, the thief heard Jesus' prayer for forgiveness for those who caused Him such immense suffering (Luke 23:34).

At that moment, he must have been deeply moved, realizing that even in His agony, Jesus displayed unparalleled compassion and love.

With profound introspection, the thief pondered the possibility of forgiveness for himself as well, prompting him to utter the simple plea,

"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom" (Luke 23:42).

In those words, he humbly acknowledged Jesus as a true king with a heavenly kingdom, demonstrating his heartfelt belief in the Savior King who could grant him eternal life.

For non-Christians, this story can serve as a poignant reflection on the character of Jesus and the hope that lies in His salvation. Just as the thief found redemption in a moment of faith and humility, you too can consider the possibility of embracing Jesus as your Savior.

Jesus offered them salvation

Jesus offered salvation to both thieves hanging alongside Him. However, their responses starkly differed.

As we know, one thief, blinded by arrogance, scoffed at Jesus and rejected His offer of redemption.

The other thief, in a remarkable display of humility, recognized his need for forgiveness and embraced Jesus as his Savior. He accepted the gift of eternal life with unwavering gratitude.

This moment underscores the critical choice each faces – to either accept or reject the salvation offered by Jesus.

The same offer of salvation that confronted the thieves is extended to us today.

Just as Jesus reached out to them in their darkest hour, He reaches out to us during our struggles, failures, and sins.

We are not exempt from the critical decision before us. In this defining moment of choice, we must recognize that there are only two eternal destinations – life with Jesus in heaven or eternal judgment in hell.

There is no middle ground or neutrality in this matter.

To not actively choose Jesus is, in essence, to reject Him. We cannot afford to be indecisive or complacent, for the choice we make will inevitably steer the course of our eternity.

Jesus died for our sins

Neither of the thieves on the cross desired to be in that agonizing position, yet their sins had led them there.

However, Jesus, in stark contrast, was perfect and sinless, bearing no guilt or shame.

Despite His innocence, He willingly sacrificed Himself on that cruel cross, not for His sake, but for ours. He became the bridge between God and humanity, offering Himself as the ultimate atoning sacrifice to save us from the burden of our sins.

No sin is too bad to be forgiven, salvation is not too late

The story of Jesus and the thief on the cross serves as a poignant reminder that no sin is too great to be forgiven, and salvation is never too late.

The thief, despite a lifetime of wrongdoing, found redemption through his sincere repentance and faith in Jesus.

His past actions did not deter Jesus from offering him salvation. Rather, it was the thief's humble and repentant heart that moved Jesus to grant him eternal life.

This reassures us that no matter how grave our transgressions may seem, there is always an opportunity for redemption through the love and grace of Jesus.

Moreover, the story of the humble thief highlights the timelessness of salvation.

Even in the final moments of his life, the thief found the courage to seek Jesus' forgiveness.

In that instant, he experienced the assurance of eternal life. This dispels any notion that salvation has an expiration date.

Just as the thief's repentance was met with grace, our journey toward salvation is not limited by time or age. Jesus' arms are always open to receive those who seek Him.

Will the thief go to Paradise?

The repentant thief will indeed go to Paradise, but the timing is yet future.

Jesus' promise guarantees his place in the Paradise of God when the New Jerusalem descends to earth. But as of right now, He is still preparing a place for us in it.

The thief, like all believers, awaits the resurrection and the glorious future that God has prepared for His faithful children.

Find Salvation in Christ

If you have not yet found salvation, know that Jesus offers the gift of eternal life to all who believe in Him and repent of their sins.

Embrace His boundless love and grace. Know that no sin is too great to be forgiven and no past is too heavy to be lifted by His power.

For those who have already found salvation in Christ, share this life-transforming message with others. Countless souls are longing for the love and forgiveness that Jesus offers.

Remember, the greatest gift we can give to someone is the opportunity to know Christ and accept His gift of eternal life.

I'm a Christian who sees the church as my second home. Not only were my parents the ones who raised me, but our church elders and members also played a significant role. However, despite attending church every Sunday, I still have some questions regarding my faith. As a writer, the articles I create serve as answers to the questions I've had and continue to have, and I hope they can serve a purpose for others who are searching for the same answers.
