The River of Water of Life Flowing

John, in describing New Jerusalem, tells us that the angel “showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street.”

The river of water of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb in the midst of the street to the twelve gates of the city to water the entire city (v. 1a). Where there is the street, there is the flow of life. Where there is the flow of life, there is the street. Our street, our way, is the flow of life.*

The river of life flows from the throne. This river supplies us to be under the throne, to be within the scope of God’s ruling. This river also flows in the middle of the street of New Jerusalem. This supplies us to be in the communication, the fellowship, of all God’s people in the city.

This river is the eternal consummation of all the water of life seen in the Bible. Here is a summary of many Old Testament references to this flowing water, from Genesis 2 to Zechariah 14.

In John 7:37-39 this flowing river of life is revealed to be the Spirit for us to drink. The same is in 1 Corinthians 12:13, “we were all given to drink one Spirit.” Thus, the portrayal of New Jerusalem in Revelation 22:1 is the Triune God—the Father God, the Lamb Jesus Christ, and the flowing Spirit.
