What awaits you in the New Year?: God's unfailing compassion

As you stand at the threshold of a new year, reflecting on the challenges and heartaches the past year may have brought your way is natural. 

Perhaps you faced the sting of loss, the disappointment of a job rejection, or the relentless grip of anxiety and depression that made each day feel like an uphill battle. In those moments, it might seem like the coming year holds the same shadows of despair. But remember that the Bible assures us that God's unfailing compassion awaits you.

Lamentations 3

Amid your struggles, the words penned by the prophet Jeremiah in the book of Lamentations offer a profound reflection of human pain and the enduring compassion of God.

During Jeremiah's time, Israel was undergoing a period of profound turmoil and suffering. The nation had turned away from God's guidance, indulging in idolatry and disobedience. The consequences of this rebellion manifested in political unrest, invasion by foreign powers, and the destruction of Jerusalem.

The Babylonian Empire, under King Nebuchadnezzar, laid siege to Jerusalem, resulting in the capture and exile of many Israelites. The city's walls were breached, the temple was destroyed, and the people faced the devastation of their homeland. This period, often called the Babylonian Captivity or Exile, they marked a dark chapter in Israel's history.

Jeremiah, as the chosen prophet of God, witnessed and experienced the anguish of his people. His role was to convey God's warning messages, calling for repentance and returning to obedience. However, the people persisted in their rebellious ways, fulfilling the prophesied judgment and the subsequent suffering of the Israelites.

In the context of Lamentations 3, Jeremiah reflects on the collective agony of the nation during this challenging period. His mercy and steadfast love

Firstly, His mercies. God's mercies are His acts of kindness and forgiveness, given freely despite our shortcomings. Imagine a compassionate hand reaching out to lift you when you stumble. That is the essence of His mercies – a continual extension of grace, not because you deserve it, but because it is rooted in His nature.

Secondly, His steadfast love. This is a love that remains unwavering and constant. It is not influenced by changing circumstances or our fluctuations in faith. Picture a love that endures through every trial and setback. That is the kind of love God offers – a steadfast, unchanging commitment to you, no matter what.

Great is His faithfulness

Consider the greatness of God's faithfulness and compassion in your life. 

Firstly, it is evident through the fulfillment of His promises. When God makes a promise, He keeps it. His faithfulness is not swayed by external factors or changing circumstances. Just as He fulfilled His promises to the people of Israel, you can trust that God will fulfill His promises to you, providing a solid foundation for your hope and trust.

Furthermore, God's faithfulness is rooted in His unchanging nature. In a world entirely of uncertainties, God remains constant. His character is dependable. And His attributes, such as love and mercy, do not waver. This unchanging nature assures you that His faithfulness and compassion are not contingent on shifting circumstances but are firmly grounded in who He is.

Consider also God's reliability in relationships. Throughout history, God has demonstrated His faithfulness in the lives of individuals and communities. Just as He was faithful to the patriarchs, prophets, and believers of old, you can rely on His faithfulness in your journey. God's compassion extends beyond a distant deity; it is a compassionate presence in the intimate details of your life.

Moreover, God's stability and dependability are unwavering. God stands as a rock – a source of stability and reliability in a world marked by instability. His faithfulness does not fluctuate with changing seasons or emotions. You can depend on Him, finding solace in His consistent and unwavering compassion that transcends the uncertainties of life.

But if He is so compassionate, why does He allow afflictions to happen?

You stand on the brink of a new year, facing challenges that tug at your peace. The weight of unmet goals and past stumbles bears down, making the path ahead unclear. Doubt creeps in, weaving shadows around your aspirations. 

But in considering the afflictions faced by the Israelites and in your own life, understand that God allows these challenges not to harm but to guide. These afflictions are a means through which God seeks to lead His people back to Him. Just as a loving parent disciplines a wayward child for their well-being, God permits difficulties to draw His children away from foolishness and back onto the path of righteousness.

This concept resonates with the parable of the wayward son, a familiar narrative in the Bible. In this parable, a prodigal son strays from his father, squandering his inheritance in reckless living. When he faces adversity and realizes the consequences of his choices, he returns home. The father, filled with compassion, welcomes the wayward son back with open arms. Similarly, God's afflictions call for His wayward children to return, and His compassion and love abound when they do.

So, as you navigate challenges, see them not as destructive forces but as God's way of leading you back to Him. Embrace the discipline, allowing it to drive away foolishness and restore you to a closer relationship with the Heavenly Father, who eagerly awaits your return with boundless compassion like the father in the parable.

And remember, grief is not an everlasting state. The poignant words of the prophet Jeremiah reveal a deep sorrow, but within that sorrow is a crucial realization – that the compassion of God brings an end to grief.

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23
