This passage is the very climax of Jesus’ prophecy. He responded to the question from his disciples about when the temple would be destroyed. Jesus made it very clear that he hasn’t been just talking about the destruction of the temple, but of his second coming and the end of the world. This is the culmination of history, and the culmination of Jesus’ prophecy as well: the second coming of Christ. Jesus had specifically mentioned the prophecies of Daniel before, and here he is directly referring to Daniel again, specifically to coming of the Son of Man in Daniel 7. Daniel forms the framework for properly understanding the whole of Jesus’ great prophetic sermon here.
The disciples asked Jesus when the temple would be destroyed. In response, Jesus gave his longest recorded prophetic sermon. He described an awful time that his followers will have to face, but he wasn’t finished yet. His prophecy continued. In referring to “the abomination that causes desolation,” Jesus is here quoting the prophet Daniel, from Chapter 8 of Daniel’s prophecy. Jesus said that he expects the readers of Daniel’s prophecies to understand their meaning. The prophet Daniel is an apocalyptic prophet, and in this lengthy prophecy by Jesus he is putting himself in that same tradition.

The Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24) talks about end times and says the sun will be darkened. So, is the solar eclipse a sign of the end times?
There has never before been a time in history when we have been so globally connected and aware of evil and sin. Just as in the days of Noah, the whole earth has been corrupted by the seed of Satan and poisoned by the enemy’s venom. A prophecy from Enoch foretells these days and provides instruction for prayer...

Of all the things we seek in a modern world the prophet or prophecy in general doesn’t get very close to the top of the list. Materialism and a host of other distractions keep that interest on the back burner for most people. For those not in the “most people”...
Due to a rising discouragement concerning unfulfilled prophetic words about the nation, and disillusionment with prophetic ministry in general, I would like to offer some suggestions. Let’s use the mistakes of the past to mature into our future and become a prophetic people who rightly represent the testimony of Jesus, who is the spirit of prophecy.
The prophet Jeremiah grew up in the Judean Wilderness, the large desert on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. As a desert dweller, he often wrote about the animals and plants found there. In Jeremiah 17, he described a person who puts his trust in God as a leafy, fruitful tree planted by flowing…

In I Samuel 26, we find a puzzling account from the life of David. He recruited Joab’s brother Abishai to go with him on a high-risk night raid into the very center of Saul’s camp. “And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay,…
