Divine providence or risky business: Examining the Bible's view on gambling

Have you ever dreamed of having a million dollars? Imagined the endless possibilities that a sudden windfall could bring?

If so, you had likely considered trying your luck at the lottery, playing bingo, or even taking a chance on private sports betting, such as billiards, horse racing, or cockfights.

Such activities seem like a normal choice for many people, but for Christians, they pose a dilemma:

Is gambling the right thing to do?

If you were to win a bet, wouldn't it be God doing His work in your life?

After all, some argue that divine providence could be at play when it comes to gambling.

As a Christian seeking guidance, you may find yourself grappling with the moral implications and uncertainties surrounding this age-old practice.

The article examines the Bible's view on gambling. We aim to delve into the teachings and principles within scripture, seeking divine guidance amidst the allure and risks associated with gambling.

Gambling, love for money, covetousness, and greed

In biblical times, gambling was not an unfamiliar practice.

It had its roots in ancient civilizations, and people engaged in various forms of games of chance.

From casting lots to determining outcomes to participating in dice games, gambling was woven into the fabric of society.

It was a way to test one's luck, make quick gains, or seek divinely guided decisions.

While the historical context provides insight into the prevalence of gambling, it does not necessarily offer a moral endorsement.

Societal views on gambling during biblical times varied.

Some cultures embraced it as a form of entertainment and leisure. Meanwhile, others viewed it with caution or even condemned it outright.

When we turn to the Bible, we find several passages that shed light on the underlying issue of greed associated with gambling.

In 1 Timothy 6:10, it is written,

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."

The verse highlights the danger of placing an excessive desire for wealth and material gain above all else.

Gambling, in its essence, often appeals to the desire for quick and effortless riches. This is because it entices individuals to take risks with the hope of striking it rich.

Proverbs 28:22 further emphasizes the connection between gambling and greed, stating,

"A stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him."

The verse warns against the pursuit of wealth through dishonest or risky means, as it ultimately leads to negative consequences.

Moreover, inherent to gambling is the temptation to covet and desire what others own.

The Tenth Commandment in Exodus 20:17 warns against coveting, saying,

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

However, gambling can fuel the desire for others' possessions, creating a breeding ground for envy and greed.

As a Christian, it is important to reflect on these passages and recognize the potential dangers of gambling.

While the Bible does not explicitly condemn gambling as a whole, it consistently warns against the love of money, covetousness, and greed.

The said underlying vices can easily intertwine with the allure of gambling, leading you down a path that conflicts with the teachings of the Bible.

Gambling and the concept of luck

As mentioned, casting lots was a common practice in biblical times. It was often used to make decisions or determine outcomes in a random and unbiased manner.

In the Old Testament, for example, we see examples of casting lots being used for various purposes.

In Joshua 18:10, lots were cast to determine the allocation of land among the tribes of Israel.

Similarly, in Acts 1:26, the apostles cast lots to determine who would replace Judas Iscariot among their ranks.

While it may resemble modern forms of gambling, it's important to note that casting lots in biblical times was often associated with seeking divine guidance rather than purely relying on luck.

Proverbs 16:33 states,

"The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord."

The verse highlights the belief that even when lots are cast, it is ultimately God who determines the outcome.

Casting of lots was seen as a way to surrender the decision-making process to God's sovereignty, recognizing His ultimate control over the results.

Still, the Bible does caution against placing excessive trust in luck or chance.

Proverbs 3:5-6 advises,

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

The verse emphasizes the importance of placing your trust in God and seeking His guidance in all aspects of life, including the decisions you make.

Why you should not rationalize gambling

Many Christians who engage in gambling often try to rationalize their actions by finding justifications.

They may argue that it's just a friendly game or a harmless form of entertainment.

Others may claim that the money they win will be used for charitable causes, such as donating to the church or helping those in need.

There are even those who argue that they gamble out of desperation, hoping to provide for their own needs or support their families.

However, it is essential to understand that as a Christian, you cannot honor God by offering Him dishonestly earned money.

While the intentions behind gambling may seem noble, the means through which the money is acquired cannot be justified.

God desires honesty and integrity in all aspects of your life, including how you get your resources.

Instead of relying on gambling as a means to meet your personal or financial needs, you are called to put your trust in God.

He provides your needs as He promises to take care of His children.

By seeking His guidance and trusting in His provision, you can have faith that God will meet your needs in ways that align with His will and principles.

If you have a desire to contribute to charitable causes or support the church, there are countless other honest ways to do so.

You can dedicate your time, talents, and resources in ways that bring glory to God and bless others.

Engage in honest work and practice good stewardship over your finances. This will allow you to support the needs of the church and those less fortunate in a manner that pleases God.

How to avoid gambling

As a Christian, it is crucial to acknowledge that gambling is a sin. Hence, avoid engaging in gambling activities.

Here are some ways how.

Stay firm on your conviction

Remind yourself of the moral values and principles that guide your faith. Commit to abstaining from gambling even when tempted or enticed by others.

Stay away from your triggers

Stay away from your triggers, such as friends who enjoy gambling or online gambling apps.

Instead, surround yourself with individuals who share your commitment to avoiding such activities, fostering an environment of support and accountability.

Challenge your superstitious thinking

Recognize that luck or chance should not dictate your financial decisions

Instead, rely on prudent planning, wise investments, and responsible stewardship in alignment with biblical teachings.

Seek refuge in Christ

When you feel the urge to gamble, turn to prayer or meditate on scriptures that strengthen your resolve.

Another, you can try redirecting your energy towards volunteering at your local church, using your time and resources to serve others in need.

God provides

Gambling may appear to offer a swift path to wealth, but remember that as a Christian, you should place your trust in God's provision and rely on honest means of earning a living.

The pursuit of riches through risky and uncertain ventures goes against the principles of faith, as God promises to meet your needs when you diligently work and trust in Him.

I'm a Christian who sees the church as my second home. Not only were my parents the ones who raised me, but our church elders and members also played a significant role. However, despite attending church every Sunday, I still have some questions regarding my faith. As a writer, the articles I create serve as answers to the questions I've had and continue to have, and I hope they can serve a purpose for others who are searching for the same answers.
