The king was furious when he learns of Haman's plot. Haman ws hanged on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. 

However, the decree to destroy the Jews remained in effect. Because of this, Esther convinced the king to issue a counter-decree. This involves allowing the Jews to defend themselves.

On the designated day of the attack, the Jews successfully defended themselves against their enemies. Their victory was celebrated as the festival of Purim. 

Meanwhile, Mordecai was elevated to a high position in the king's court.
