The struggle to leave everything behind

Philippians 3:7-8:

"But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things."

Mark 8:36:

"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?"

When Christ first met each of the Apostles, He asked them to leave everything behind and follow Him. Matthew, a tax collector, immediately left his booth to become a disciple. Simon and Andrew, fishermen by trade, abandoned their nets. James and John, sons of Zebedee, left their father and the family business. The call was clear: forsake all and follow Christ.

You, too, have formed a relationship with Christ, committing to follow Him. However, the struggle persists as you grapple with leaving behind earthly desires and possessions. Just as the Apostles faced challenges in parting with their familiar lives, you find it hard to detach from the comfort and security of what you have known.

And that is normal.

The devil may be hindering you, creating attachments that impede your commitment to Christ.

This could include a desire for wealth, status, or material comfort, diverting your focus from the spiritual journey and fostering an unhealthy attachment to the transient pleasures of this world.

Additionally, the devil may exploit your fear of change, making the prospect of leaving behind the familiar and stepping into the unknown seem daunting. This fear can create a barrier, preventing you from fully embracing the call to follow Christ and hindering your spiritual growth.

Furthermore, the devil may whisper doubts and insecurities, undermining your confidence in your ability to live a life centered on Christ.

However, the Apostles overcame these challenges by staying close to Christ and relying on Him for strength.

They regularly prayed and sought guidance through their faith. This connection helped them resist the devil's temptations and find the courage to leave behind worldly attachments.

They also supported one another, forming a community of believers who shared a common commitment to Christ. This unity provided strength and encouragement, helping them face the challenges of detachment together.

Like them, you can seek support from fellow believers. Share your journey with those who understand the challenges of leaving everything behind for Christ.

Doing so helps you remain accountable. Regular interactions with the community offer a chance for open discussions about faith and challenges. Sharing experiences and insights creates an environment of transparency, allowing you to openly address areas where you may be struggling.

Moreover, it creates a shared commitment to Christ's teachings. When you are surrounded by others who also strive to follow Christ, it reinforces a collective dedication to the values and principles of your faith.

Together, you encourage each other in your commitment to follow Him.

Also, regularly engage in prayer and reflection.

Prayer serves as a moment of self-reflection, allowing you to assess your actions and thoughts. This self-awareness is crucial in identifying areas where you may be struggling with attachments to worldly desires. Through reflection, you gain insight into your challenges and can take deliberate steps towards detachment.

It also provides a space for expressing gratitude and seeking forgiveness. As you acknowledge the blessings in your life and seek forgiveness for any shortcomings, you create a mindset of humility and gratitude. This mindset can contribute to a more profound understanding of the importance of following Christ's teachings and the need to let go of worldly attachments.

However, remember that the process is gradual. But like the Apostles who initially struggled, you can find a profound purpose in abandoning everything for Him.

I'm a Christian who sees the church as my second home. Not only were my parents the ones who raised me, but our church elders and members also played a significant role. However, despite attending church every Sunday, I still have some questions regarding my faith. As a writer, the articles I create serve as answers to the questions I've had and continue to have, and I hope they can serve a purpose for others who are searching for the same answers.
