Financial anxiety: What to do when you are flooded with debts

You constantly worry about money. Those bills keep stacking up on the kitchen counter, each one a reminder of the financial juggling act you are stuck in. Your mind is always buzzing with thoughts of how to keep everything afloat. It feels like you are walking on eggshells, afraid that any unexpected expense—a busted car or a sudden medical bill—will send your carefully balanced budget crashing down. And saving? It is a nice idea, but with every penny already spoken for, it feels like an impossible dream.

Your financial anxiety has led you down a dangerous path—you have turned to borrowing money just to stay afloat, whether it be from loan sharks, banks, and the like. Now, you find yourself drowning in a sea of debt, with no clear way out.

It is a vicious cycle, and you are stuck in the middle of it, feeling overwhelmed and helpless.

The Bible warns against being stuck in debt, emphasizing the importance of being financially responsible.

In Proverbs 22:7, it states, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."

This verse illustrates how being in debt can make you feel enslaved to those you owe money to. For example, imagine you borrowed money from a friend to pay your bills, but now you are constantly stressed about repaying them, feeling like you are under their control.

But now that you are drowned in it, what can you do?

As God scolds you, He also offers you guidance.

In Romans 13:8, the Bible advises, "Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law."

This verse encourages prioritizing love and fulfilling obligations, including financial ones. For instance, suppose you are struggling with credit card debt. You can start by creating a repayment plan and sticking to it, gradually paying off what you owe and avoiding accumulating more debt.

Additionally, the Bible teaches the importance of seeking help and support. In Proverbs 15:22, it says, "Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed."

This verse emphasizes the value of seeking wise counsel when dealing with financial challenges. For example, if you are overwhelmed by debt, you can seek advice from a financial advisor or a trusted mentor who can offer guidance on managing your finances effectively.

Recovering from debt may not be easy. It requires discipline, patience, and determination. You may face setbacks and obstacles along the way. However, do not lose hope. Remember that every small step you take towards financial freedom is a victory. So, keep pressing forward, even when the journey seems daunting.

And the next time your financial anxiety consumes you, try to counter it with positive affirmations and practical actions. Remind yourself that you have the strength and resilience to overcome obstacles. Focus on solutions rather than dwelling on your problems and letting them consume you.

Also, try to practice gratitude and mindfulness to cultivate a positive mindset. Take time to appreciate the blessings in your life, even if you think they are small.

Remember that challenges are temporary. And you have the power to create a brighter future for yourself.

I'm a Christian who sees the church as my second home. Not only were my parents the ones who raised me, but our church elders and members also played a significant role. However, despite attending church every Sunday, I still have some questions regarding my faith. As a writer, the articles I create serve as answers to the questions I've had and continue to have, and I hope they can serve a purpose for others who are searching for the same answers.
